Your Child and Canker Sores

June 28, 2024

Canker sores are unpleasant. But the good news is that these painful aphthous ulcers (their medical name) can’t spread from one child to another. It’s not clear why they appear. Genetics, food allergies and vitamin deficiencies could play roles. A pedodontist can diagnose them in your child, especially if a sore is chronic.

By emphasizing preventive dental care, we at the office of Blue Coral Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics are dedicated to helping every patient enjoy the benefits of a healthy and beautiful smile. We provide a comprehensive program of care designed to protect your child’s teeth and reduce the risk of dental disease.

Canker sores in and around your child’s mouth are fairly easy to spot. These blisters have a yellow-tinted or white coating and are outlined in red. They sometimes show up in clusters. More good news is that they typically go away on their own within 14 days.

Until then, though, you can assuage your child’s pain and promote healing in several ways. Give him (or her) over-the-counter pain relievers, and tell him to stay away from coarse foods that could aggravate his gums, tongue and cheeks.

Have him steer clear of foods that are acidic, spicy and very salty. If he doesn’t already use a soft-bristled toothbrush, switch him over to one and tell him to brush his teeth lightly. Using dental floss (which he should be doing anyway) can help lessen infection, and employ a gentle, mildly flavored toothpaste. Rinsing his mouth with an alcohol-free mouthwash will combat bacteria and assist in healing.

If your child’s canker sore(s) continues to be a nuisance, his pediatric dentist could prescribe a special ointment or targeted mouthwash. If canker sores return to haunt your child more than two or three times a year and are severely painful, take him to a pedodontist immediately.
